The Town of New Windsor encompasses Little Britain, Rock Tavern and Vails Gate and includes Stewart International Airport. The airport is home base of the NY Air National Guard & Marine Corp refueling wing. Active efforts are presently underway to privatize the airport and further enhance its transportation capability. The name of the town is from Windsor England, it is unknown who attached the New prefix to the town.
During much of the Revolutionary War, New Windsor served as the major depot for the Continental Army and Army Medical Dept. The majority of Town residents supported the war efforts and its leaders like General George Washington.
Historically, New Windsor is home to The Last Encampment of the Continental Army.
